Your employer is paying you a salary.
But there’s a catch: your employer doesn’t tell you how much you should be earning.

You’re not alone If you’ve been making less than $50,000 a year for the past six months, your salary may not seem high, but you may be underpaid.
And that could mean you’re earning less than you should, according to research from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
“We’re talking about about a $200,000 salary in the United States,” says AICPA senior research manager Andrew O’Shea.
“It’s a very small amount compared to what a good developer earns in the U.S.”
It’s also unlikely that you’ll get the same type of compensation from your employer.
A recent AICP study of 100 U.K. businesses found that of the companies it surveyed, fewer than a quarter reported that they had a “minimum employee base” of five employees.
“The majority of these companies pay employees who are over 50,” says O’Hera.
But a significant percentage of the employers didn’t pay enough.
“That is very worrying,” he says.

workforce is younger than 50, and the percentage of people over 50 is growing.
“If you’re over 50, your pay is going to be much more unequal,” says Dr. Laura Miller, an associate professor of management at the University of Southern California.
“So you’re going to have an older workforce, and a lower proportion of people are going to make the minimum wage, which means the minimum-wage pay is not going to grow.”
The AICA study also found that the median hourly wage for software developers in the top 1 percent of earners in the country was $11.83.
That’s less than a third of the median pay for all other workers.
The median hourly pay for software engineers in the bottom 20 percent was just $8.51, while the median wage for those in the middle 20 percent of workers was just under $20 per hour.
“What we know from other research is that this is a lot more inequitable than you might think,” says Miller.
“And it’s going to get worse.
We’re going see this trend even with minimum-income workers.”
The U.N. Human Rights Council says that if you are working on a company’s site and earn more than the minimum, you are committing discrimination and that companies should take steps to prevent it.
“This is not a question of whether or not a person should be paid, it’s a question about how,” says Katherine Taylor, the U-N’s High Commissioner for Human Rights.
“We need to do everything we can to stop employers from discriminating against their workers.”

“Pay is an absolute must,” says Taylor.

You should budget for them every month, as they cover most of your living expenses.
But it’s important to also account for your time spent on the job, including the amount of time you spend doing tasks, including writing, creating content and maintaining a site.
For example, you may work on your site for three months and then you may take two weeks off.
You may also spend more than 20 hours per week on personal tasks, such as emailing or using the internet.

“Your time is important,” says Jones.
“You should also factor into the amount you earn, and how much time you work in total, because if you have too little time, you’ll miss out on all of that valuable time.”
